DIG PH - BLOG 10

Blog 10: Due Wednesday, Apr 4th
1. Write a paragraph about your weakness and your strength in photography?
2. What could improve the weakness to become strength?
3. Which of these compositions work better? Why or why not?

  1. My weakness in photography is not taking the time to find the perfect shot. I think sometimes photography can be a waiting game and when I try to rush it, I find that I'm not nearly as satisfied with my photographs. I think my strength is in finding interesting angles and being able to manipulate photos in photoshop to achieve the look that I want.

My weakness could be improved by simply taking more time and thinking about how I want to configure the shot.

I prefer the second photo simply because I like that she isn't perfectly centered and I like that my eye flows with the line of the fencing.

  2. I think one of my weaknesses is not taking the time to find a good subject and setting. I think one of my strengths is I try to consider the overall composition of a shot. I have made myself stop to consider the way things appear and try to not make the amateur mistake of centering things.
I can set certain times during the week devoted to looking for the perfect shot, also I can try to be more observant to everything around me and how it could make a good photo.
I like both shots. But I like the first one a little more. The subject and bridge are both still slightly off center. But the first one includes the slope under the bridge which adds a little more dynamics to it. The photo has strong horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.

  3. My weakness is just not being artistically inclined. I dont see the things that most of the people in the class are able to come up with. The only way I think that I can improve this strength is to keep taking photos and to learn from what others do. My strentgh in the class however is not seeing what others see. I take photos from a different angle or perspective than most in the class. I think that my photos are kind of different and some may consider them bad, but others may think that they are appealing. In my opinion I believe that the second shot gives a better image. It is closer and you can see the person's face better that is being shot. Both are good shots and have strengths and weaknesses but in my opinion I would choose the second shot.

  4. My weakness in photography would have to be stability. I've found that I love the composition of many of my shots, but, unfortunately, many of them appear blurry on the computer. Fortunately, a tripod is an extremely easy fix for this looming problem in my work, as well as techniques like keeping my arms close to my body. In my opinion, the second photograph works better compositionally. It is more dramatic, and utilizes the rule of thirds far better than the first.

  5. My weakness is that there are only select types of photos I like to take and I don't branch out much from that area. This class has made me take photos that I normally wouldn't do on my own and with each shoot I try to take more photos than I need to. The more photos I take that are outside my comfort range the more normal it will be become. I also need to learn to become more patient when taking my photos. The bottom composition is my favorite because the bridge draws your eye across the entire photo and her position within the photo is stronger.

  6. My weakness has to be patience. I cant stand to wait for a shot. Take for example the "bug" shot. I looked like a total imbecile running all over creation trying to get a bug to stay still long enough for me to get a shot. If I have to sit still and wait for one, forget it. As to how I can strengthen that weakness, not a clue. Maybe when I am not so pressed for time it will be easier.
As for the two photos, the second is by far the better picture. It feels less claustrophobic. The eye has room to move, there is too much drama in the top photo squeezed into to narrow a frame.
