  1. Hello! My name is Katelyn Daugherty and I am an English and Graphic Design major. Learning the fundamentals of design will help me in both fields that I study. It will help to grow my appreciation for aesthetics in graphic art and in English, it will help me to articulate regarding terms that I have learned. The primary element of design that Van Gogh uses in "Starry Night" is line and shape, which add depth. The painting also incorporates texture and has a striking color combination that appeals to the eye.

  2. Hi, my name is Heather Corley and I am a Graphic Design major. Design can help me in every possible way in my field of study, I will know more on what I have to do that will be aesthetically pleasing to my client in any project I do in the future. In Van Gogh's "Starry Night" I believe his use of short fast lines give it a sharper texture to the look of the composition. Also the lines move you're eyes across the painting. The use of color and value highlight certain parts of the painting.

  3. My name is Stephanie Bickett, I am an Elementary Education major. Design helps me in case I must teach an art or drawing lesson. Many programs have been cut and I know teachers must sometimes incorporate art into lesson plans. The element which stands out to me is line. The painting has an amazing depth, allowing the viewer's eyes to roam with the swirls down into the town. It also uses amazing color and texture.

  4. whats up, my name is Shiven Harris, i am a Graphic design major. I think design will help me out a lot by helping me be more creative and not to worry as much. In the painting of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" i noticed that he had some elements that he used such as Color, by using warm colors.Texture bc some lines are very thick and bold and Value and the way he used it makes me feel like this painting is very dark.

  5. My name is Chase Durrance and I'm a Graphic Design and Studio Art double major. Design is extremely powerful to me because it's present in every aspect of our lives. Buildings, print, and even the clothes we wear are just a few example of how design affects us all throughout our days. Specifically relating to Graphic Design, 2D design is the basis on which the whole art is based. Without a working knowledge, it would be impossible to practice. Van Gogh used rhythm very well in "Starry Night." The piece has a feeling of movement through his repetition of curved lines. It's almost as if you can feel the wind blowing.

  6. My name is Hannah Hudnall and I am a Graphic Design major as well. Design is important in my major because without design I would not be successful in what I do and the project I get involved with. Without design my works would be lame and unappealing to the eye. The short, choppy lines Van Gogh uses in this painting helps the eye move across the painting; the complimentary colors yellow and blue give a calm feeling to the painting. And the textures and depth of this painting are quiet amazing by the darkness and thickness of the lines.

  7. My name is Tim Schueler and I am a Criminal Justice Major. I believe that although design might not relate directly to my field it helps use my critical thinking skills and develop a more in depth thought process. Van Gogh's "Starry Night" shows many different elements of design. Texture, line, and direction all help this painting flow and become very appealing to the eye. By using these elements it makes the movement of the wind become more apparent.

  8. Hi! My name is Jaimie Fike and I'm an English major. I'm one of those college kids that is going to get a degree and work in a completely unrelated field :) I work at a local non-profit organization and design can help me in my career there by further developing my eye for aesthetics. From flyers to annual reports, I am constantly having to use design to create things that are pleasing to the public eye.
Vam Gogh's painting, which is one of my favorites, incorporates line, direction, and texture. The entire painting is a series of small lines. When looking at the painting, your eyes are immediately drawn to follow in the direction that the sky flows. It also has a very roughly texturized look.

  9. Hello my name is Kayla Phelps and I am an Art Education Major. 2D Design is going to help me with my major by allowing me to be more creative and more confident in my work in general. It also helps that design is an art class.
Most predominately Van Gogh’s painting shows line and texture. Small lines were used to create the entire picture. The texture of Van Gogh's Starry Night is almost touchable. The painting looks both smooth and rough at once and tells the onlookers a great deal about the artist's mood at the time.

  10. My name is Brandon Harper and I'm a Graphic Design major. Design in my major is everything. Without any type or style of design, my major basically wouldn't exist at all. It makes everything about my major 'pop' and exciting to look at from all aspects of art.
Van Gogh's painting shows elements such as line and texture in great detail. The lines and brush stroke used in this painting bring together the whole idea. The flow of the piece is soft and easy to look at the whole painting. The texture of the brush strokes show how each specific part feels to the artist. The smooth texture of the wind shows its almost a background image.

2: Design is crucial to my field. in fact, it IS my field. if i can't properly identify and utilize design elements, i can't work in my field at all.

3: Complementary colors, asymmetrical balance, shape (the trees, stars) and implied texture with the method of painting.
